What the rules ask of your car

• Uber and Lyft in Ontario: a safety inspection and a Safety Standards Certificate every year, uploaded within 36 days of the inspection. Uber also wants a new certificate if the car passes 40,000 to 50,000 km before its annual date.
• Mississauga's rideshare rules: the vehicle must be seven model years or newer, and it must be on snow tires or all-weather tires from December 1 to April 30. Toronto has the same rule for Uber and Lyft cars.
• Toronto taxis and limos: a Safety Standards Certificate filed once a year, not more than 36 days old when it is filed.

What we do for working cars

• Brakes. A rideshare car stops a hundred times more per day than a commuter. Pads, rotors and calipers, shown to you before you pay.
• Oil and fluids. On the schedule your kilometres set, not the one on the sticker.
• Tires. Changeover before the December 1 winter deadline, rotations, replacements. The Tire Hub is in the same plaza.
• Suspension and steering. Potholes, airport curbs and a heavy trunk wear out struts, links and bearings early.
• Air conditioning. Passengers rate the ride. Recharge, leaks, compressors.
• The repairs you need to pass your annual safety. Lights, exhaust, brakes, steering, tires, the things an inspection fails a car on.

What it costs to run a car for a living

The City of Toronto's 2024 study of rideshare driver earnings put maintenance at $3.86 and repairs at $2.34 for every hour on the app, which works out to about 21 cents a kilometre. A driver in the busiest quarter runs about 35,000 km a year, so upkeep comes to roughly $7,300 a year. At that rate, an estimate that does not grow once the car is apart matters more to you than to anyone.
